HOW TO FRENCH PRESS
Of all the different coffee brewing methods, the French Press is certainly one of the most popular, and with good reason too. This nifty little tool will produce a rich and delicious cup of joe with little effort.
METHOD
Start by bringing water to a boil. Whilst the water is heating, grind your coffee beans to a coarse setting. We recommend you start with a ratio of 1:12, and so for 30 grams of coffee, you will need 350 grams of water. French Press coffee is forgiving, so if you do not have a scale to accurately measure the weights, use 2 heaped tablespoons for a 2-cup French Press.
Place your coffee grounds in the French Press, and pour in twice the amount (approx. 60 grams) of boiling water. Give it a quick stir with a wooden paddle, and allow to bloom for 30 seconds.
Then, pour in the rest of the water, and gently place the lid on top of your brew. Do not plunge just yet! Let the coffee steep for four minutes.
After 4 minutes, press the filter down. If it’s hard to press, that means your grind is too fine; if the plunger “thunks” immediately down to the floor, it means your grind is too coarse.
When you’ve finished pressing, serve the coffee immediately. Don’t let it sit, as this will cause it to continue brewing and over-extract.
The easiest way to clean the French Press is by adding a little water to the grounds, give it a good swirl, and empty into the trash or compost bin.
