GRINDING FOR A PURPOSE

We all know grinding coffee beans on a daily basis isn’t on everyone’s wish list, but when it comes to coffee, it should be one of life’s greatest simple pleasures. If you’re looking for the perfect cup, you should grind only moments before you brew.

MATCH THE GRIND TO YOUR METHOD

The tricky thing about grinding coffee is that it must be ground specific to your preferred brewing method, whether it is for a moka pot, filter coffee or a french press. The whole reason we use different grind sizes for different coffee brewers is to avoid over, or under extracting our coffee. If your (good quality) coffee tastes bitter, or sour, it means you need to tweak your grind.

Coarse, Medium, and Fine “grinds” are used for various brewing methods to get the best flavour possible. What’s really tough is explaining what those grounds actually look like.

  • Coarse – Chunky, distinct particles, similar to soil texture.
  • Medium – Sand texture.
  • Fine – Smooth, like sugar or salt when you rub it between your fingers.
  • Super Fine – Not as fine as flour or powdered sugar, but definitely in that ball park. You can still feel some grit.
  • Turkish Grind – Like flour, very powdery.

BLADE or BURR Grinders?

One of the most common mistakes in grinding coffee is Blade Grinders. Blade Grinders will not give you the perfect cup as they do not produce a consistent grind, and will result in fine grinds and coarse grinds, which translates into a messy coffee; with a few particles under-extracted, and a few others over-extracted. Aside from a clear lack of consistency, blade grinders have another downfall. They can only work by spinning extremely fast, which causes heat and friction. As a result, your coffee may taste a little scorched and less fresh than if ground in a burr grinder.

In comparison, Burr grinders use uniform pressure and rotation to essentially ‘crush’ beans into perfect consistency. They can achieve this at low speeds, meaning no added heat, and maintain a precise and consistent uniform grind.

FINE GRIND

Finely ground coffee is suitable for Moka Pots, Percolators and Espresso Machines. A Finer, powder Grind is for Turkish Coffee.

MEDIUM GRIND

A Medium Grind is mostly used for Auto-Drip Coffee Makers, Syphon, V60 Pour Over & Filter Coffee Makers.

COARSE GRIND

A Coarse Grind is generally used for the French Press, Toddy Makers, Cold Brew Coffee & Vacuum Coffee Makers.

BURR GRINDERS

So what’s the big deal about burr grinders? Precision and versatility!

Your world’s best coffee beans fall down between two burrs that have been pre-set (by you) allowing accurate grinding for the brewing method of your choice. Your coffee shall be ground perfectly, day in and day out. You may still need to experiment and tweak, as you may find that the recommended settings need to be adjusted to your taste. Once you get the settings right, though, the “Perfect Cup” is only moments away.

Our burr grinders will grind coffee accurately for any purpose from French Press to Espresso to Turkish.
